How I Improved Our Google Rating with Honest Feedback

"People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories, and magic." (Seth Godin)

I've learned the hard way how crucial it is to manage Google reviews effectively. For years, we grappled with a low rating, not because we were underperforming, but because we lacked a strategic approach to reviews. It's easier for people to leave a negative review than a positive one, and even a minor misstep can lead to a harsh 1-star rating.

The slippery slope of chasing perfect ratings

We've all encountered businesses offering deals like "Leave a 5-star review for a free side dish" or "Enter a lucky draw by giving us a 5-star rating."

These tactics might offer a temporary ratings boost, but they come at a long-term cost. Customers can often sense when enthusiasm is exaggerated. If your overall rating seems too good to be true, potential customers may actively seek out negative reviews.

Even more importantly, no matter how exceptional your product or service is, flooding your profile with fake 5-star reviews can undermine your reputation. Ironically, these reviews could hide the true quality of your work.

My journey to reclaim a good rating, without incentives

  1. Ask for feedback and engage with your customers. Start by having open conversations. Asking for feedback shows that you genuinely care about their experience. A customer who feels heard is much more likely to leave a positive review.
  2. Don't hesitate to ask for reviews. Most people won't think to do it on their own, but they're often happy to help when asked directly. Ask at the right moment, such as when a customer has expressed satisfaction.
  3. Simplify the review process. Provide a QR code or direct link. Customers are much more likely to follow through if the process is quick. Add links in thank-you emails, on receipts, even in product packaging.
  4. Personalize the request. Something as simple as "If you enjoyed my service, it would mean a lot if you could mention my name in the review: it helps me and my boss recognize the value I'm bringing" can make a big difference. It feels sincere, not transactional.
  5. Implement a standard process for your team. Help your team understand why this matters, both to the company and to them personally. When your team takes pride in their work and actively seeks customer feedback, it reflects the quality of service they deliver.
  6. Ask more than once, and automate it. Don't be afraid to follow up. Test different times. Once you identify what works best, automate it. Set up automated emails after a service is completed or a purchase is made. Automation ensures no opportunity for a review is missed.

A well-earned 4.4-star rating can do far more for your business than a fake 5-star one ever could. Authenticity fosters loyalty, and that's what keeps customers coming back. For those who take pride in what they do, genuine reviews are more than just good marketing. They're a source of motivation.
