Unlocking New Capabilities: AI and No-Code Tools Beyond Just a Productivity Boost

Today, I'm shifting the focus from how AI can make your job faster and better to how it can enable you to accomplish things you once thought impossible.

Starting to use no-code tools: Zapier

My passion lies in building things and simplifying processes. However, not knowing how to code has always meant relying on others to bring these ideas to fruition. With so many feature requests from the team, you always have to justify the impact for prioritisation, even for a tiny feature that only requires minimal effort.

In 2020, I was introduced to a no-code tool, Zapier, a workflow automation software. What began as small, simple automations grew into more complex and impactful workflows, such as qualifying leads and streamlining operations. Suddenly, I could automate tasks and build systems without writing a single line of code. It felt magical! Yet, I still faced limitations. I needed more customization to suit the business cases that pre-built actions could not accommodate.

Some business scenarios require very specific data manipulations that standard Zapier actions cannot perform. For example, creating custom CRM fields or handling unique data processing tasks often necessitates the creation of Custom Actions. Custom Actions allow you to create your own actions for existing apps on Zapier, provided the apps' APIs support the required functionality. However, this process can be cumbersome without a coding background.

Zapier with AI

That's when AI transformed everything. Zapier introduced an AI chatbot to support users in building Custom Actions recently. I couldn't find any official announcement online, but I'm sure the new feature might have launched 1–2 months ago because I built a Custom Action just 2–3 months ago in a more painful way: coding with ChatGPT, switching platforms, copying scripts, and handling error codes.

This time was different. Using Zapier's ActionBot felt like having a tech-savvy friend who understood exactly what I wanted to achieve. I accomplished everything within one platform: Zapier.

For example, I wanted to update our CRM with a specific "Lost reason" under a particular scenario, something traditional Zapier actions couldn't handle. On the left side, Zapier's AI chatbot, ActionBot, guided me through the process. I described what I needed: an action to update the CRM with the "Lost reason" when a lead was lost. The AI interpreted my requirements and started setting up the actual custom action on the right side of the screen.

Within minutes, I built a Custom Action tailored to my needs. I tested it, debugged it with the chatbot's help, and deployed it seamlessly. The whole process took about 15 minutes, all without writing a single line of code. I didn't have to manage API keys or code manually; the AI assistant streamlined the entire process, making it intuitive and efficient.

The exhilaration of achieving this without coding was immense. AI didn't just make me more efficient; it empowered me to bring my ideas to life. While platforms like GitHub Copilot might offer a similar experience, this was my first time achieving such results with Zapier.

Conclusion

Imagine this: someone in their 40s who has always dreamed of creating digital art but felt hindered by a lack of technical skills, someone who envisions building simple yet impactful software without a computer science background, or someone passionate about composing music but lacking the formal training. AI and no-code tools can unlock these possibilities and more. If you've ever felt limited by a lack of technical skills, these tools can help you turn your dreams into reality. Just keep exploring!
